criminal justice question 9

Competency 1: Use credible criminal justice information to develop a professional perspective.

Introduction
The reading “Becoming a Critic of Your Thinking” (Paul & Elder, 2013), linked in the Resources, details several strategies to enhance critical thinking skills. Select one strategy that you have seen work well in your professional life. Name which strategy you have chosen. Give an example of a situation where using this strategy led to positive results.

The second part of this discussion is to select one strategy of thinking that gets you in trouble from those listed in “Becoming a Critic of Your Thinking” that you have seen in operation in your professional life. Name which strategy you have chosen. Give an example of how the situation might have been more positive had critical thinking strategies been correctly applied.

As you complete this discussion, avoid performing research and using citations. Internet research is not needed because you are sharing your own thoughts and your own critical thinking experiences.

To ensure your participation meets the expectations, refer to the G.R.E.A.T. Discussion Guidelines and the CJ Discussion Participation Scoring Guide provided in the Resources. For the purpose of scoring this discussion, your own thoughts and experiences will be counted as “creditable information” to meet the criterion, “Use creditable information or resources to support positions, conclusions, or perspectives in the discussion.”

Introduction 2
Cheating and academic honesty in school is of great concern to parents, school administrators, and students. Therefore, educational institutions—secondary and post-secondary—implement a variety of methods to encourage academic honesty. The term plagiarism is one form of cheating that online students need to understand and avoid.

Because this class is comprised of learners from a variety of educational backgrounds, some learners may have used methods other than APA to cite and reference other authors, and some new learners may not have had any prior experience with citation and reference requirements.

For this discussion, share your past experiences with the use of references and citations. In your main post answer the following:

Did any of your former class work require the use of referencing? Why was it required? What style of referencing (such as MLA, APA, or CMS) did you use? Indicate the class and school where you had this experience.
When you are searching online for new knowledge or school work, where do you find other authors’ ideas? Explain your search technique. Share how you might use the information you found.
What tools are you familiar with using to cite other authors?
Why do you think academic honesty is important? Why should plagiarism be avoided?
Are sound ethics in this matter important for those in criminal justice careers?
What is your understanding of plagiarism? Talk about your commitment to academic honesty in your Capella coursework. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with the citation process, say so.
