To professor and class,
The area I am focuses on is the steadily increasing prescription drug costs. I work in a specialty office, and one of the first lines of treatment for patients prior to invasive procedures or survives is medications. Many patients are prescribed medications that work wonders for them and cures their symptoms however, are too expensive to buy every month. According to the article Prescription drug costs to grow slowly in 2019, the trending costs for specialty prescription drugs is to double in cost.
As a nurse, I hear patient explain how having a specialty drug that works great for them is something they cannot afford is discouraging and difficult to work around. I feel there are definitely ethical concerns to the price of prescription drugs. Specialty type of drugs include cancer treatments, rheumatoid arthritis drugs and drugs for hemophilia are likely to increase in price. The article points out that there is an increase in health plan costs significantly outpacing the general inflation of wages or salaries. The author Edmunds states “generics previously made up 80% of all drugs sold in the US and were so much cheaper than prescription medications, which was a cost savings for consumer and a way to limit rising health care costs. Now the price of generic drugs have skyrocketed†(2016).
Nurses working in community health care can be a catalyst for a change in it he rise in prescription medications. We first can help patients enroll in pharmaceutical health care plans. We also can encourage patients to use apps to look up prices of drugs or refer patient
S to trying over the counter medications. Health care providers and patients should be encourage to voicing their concerns to drug companies and hopefully initiate a change.
Thank you, Shannon
